Don’t Jeopardize Your Probation Status By Choosing the Wrong DUI Class/DWI Class.
If you need to take a DUI education class or an alcohol awareness class as part of your probation requirements there are some things you must consider before enrolling in a class.
1. How many hours does the court require you to take?
Check your probation papers before you enroll in a class. Find out how many hours of classroom instruction you are required to take. They may specify a Level I or a Level II class, but the important thing is the number of hours. For example, if you take a Level I class and you assume it will meet your probation requirements, but it’s only an 8 hour class and you need to take 12 hours, this Level I class wouldn’t be appropriate and you could end up paying for another class.
2. Pre-conviction recommendations
If you are working with an attorney and plan to complete your DUI classes prior to your scheduled court appearance, you will first need to have a chemical health assessment. If the chemical health assessment recommends an alcohol and drug education class, check the number of class hours recommended.
3. Classroom vs. online classes
Many counties will not accept online classes as part of your probation requirements. Check to make sure an online class is acceptable to the court before enrolling. If you are searching for an online class, DrugAlcoholClasses.com provides several options for Online DWI Classes and Alcohol Awareness classes.
More and more courts are requiring enrollment in classroom settings with the classes based on a cognitive-behavior model. The goals of these types of programs are to 1) prevent recidivism and 2) prevent relapse of the behaviors which led to the DUI. The Driving With Care® program is a nationally recognized cognitive behavior program for DUI offenders.
4. Location
Are the classes held at a business location or in someone’s home? Does it look like a temporary situation or an established business? Established businesses should carry the appropriate levels of professional liability insurance as well as property liability coverage.
Do some research to make sure you aren’t wasting your time and money by selecting the wrong class or jeopardizing your probation status.
If you contact a reputable agency and they don’t have a class that fits what you need, they should be able to direct you to an agency that can assist you to find an appropriate DWI Class.
